Gift of freedom

One of the most exciting rites of passage in a teenager’s life is when they receive their driver’s license—it’s their symbol of freedom.

But people with disabilities, this story often plays out differently.

At Auto Extras, we don’t think it should.

We believe every person deserves to have freedom and live life to its fullest. It is our passion to help make that happen.

For more than 40 years, we’ve been helping individuals with disabilities—and their families and the organisations that support them—to increase their mobility by customising vehicles to suit their needs. We know every person is different so we create custom transport solutions for each individual.

Our staff are caring and experienced, and take time to understand each situation and the circumstances that surround it.

Occupational therapist Sally Redman is one of many professionals who refer clients to us.

“My role as an occupational therapist is to discuss the considerations specific to my client’s situation so they have an informed choice and the best possible outcome,” she said.

Sally, who works with Lifetec, recommends modifications that help people with physical disabilities to drive or access their vehicle more easily.

Just like people, disabilities come in all shapes and sizes. Depending on a person’s needs, they may require a customised car with hand controls, or that enables easier entering and exiting of the car, or that has a wheelchair hoist.

Louise, one of Sally’s clients, was having trouble walking long distances. She received a powered wheelchair but because it weighed more than 150kg, she could not take it with her in her car.

Louise required a range of customisations to her new Honda Odyssey. It was fitted with an Autochair Olympian boot-lifter and hand controls that allowed her to lift her wheelchair into her car and drive independently.

“Louise is no longer restricted to where she can visit as she is able to transport her powered wheelchair with her in the car,” Sally explained. “She can use her wheelchair in shopping centres and at medical appointments.”

We work with occupational therapists and other medical professionals to ensure you receive the best possible transport solution.
