Guide To Driving With a Disability

Whether you were born with a disability or acquired one later in life, it’s still possible to drive and enjoy the freedom that comes with it.

Check The Licence Rules In Your State

First up on the list to driving with a disability is to check the licensing for your state. How disability is categorised, the motoring authority’s process in relation to medical reports, testing and exemptions all vary from state to state and it’s important to check all the details to make getting your driver’s license all easy as possible.

Contact A Specialist OT

Before going to the expense of buying a car, it’s important to meet with a Driver Trained Occupational Therapist (DTOT) or Specialised Driving Instructor (SDI). They can assess your body’s weaknesses and strengths, and suggest what modifications would best suit you.

Lodge An Application For Relevant Funding (Where Applicable)

If applicable to you, next on the list is to lodge applications for funding from relevant funding bodies such as the NDIS, iCare Veterans Affair and Australian Defence Force.

Test The Equipment

Trying out a variety of equipment and modifications is the best way to determine which best suits you and your needs. For this, consider leasing a vehicle that has already been modified. Auto Extras has three different modified vehicles available for short term hire, with varying modifications to allow you to get a feel for what suits you best for your own modifications.

Order Your Modifications

Once your funds are secured, the process of getting your modifications can begin. If you’re buying a new car, it helps to have your dealer communicate with Auto Extras about when your new car will be available, so that we can have the installation equipment ready to go so that you get your new car as soon as possible. Depending on the complexity of your modifications, it can take from one week to a couple of months for your vehicle to be ready.

Don’t Let Your Disability Stop you From Driving With Confidence

Once you’ve navigated these steps, it’s now time to enjoy your new car and freedom!
