When installing hand controls in a vehicle, the question always comes up for discussion: What should be done about the knee air bag located under the steering wheel? We cannot install the hand controls over the top of this airbag, and leave it active. It is both illegal and dangerous to do so.
For some time there has been no regulation regarding the disabling of the Knee Air Bar when fitting the manual hand controls. To keep the Knee Air Bag active, a more costly hand control system has to be installed. This has meant more expense for the client.
We have been in recent contact with Queensland Transport about this and have been informed that the decision regarding the Knee Air Bag regulation has been postponed until December 2017.
At this stage, when we install a set of hand controls in a client’s vehicle, we remove the Knee Air Bag and provide the client with a Letter of Air Bag Relaxation. This outlines the steps we have taken and the outcome of removing the airbag; this is approved by the Queensland Department of Transport.
